Blog Post Week 2: #2 Print Media

We are living in an era where our media is changing for the better. Better for the consumer and better for the producer. Digital media is fast becoming the main source of media whether its news, educational or advertisements; the list goes on. Printed media is slowly declining with media outlets shifting on to the digital age. The newspaper I am looking at today is the Daily Mail. Daily Mail has been controversial in recent years such as blaming the Syrian refugees for the 2015 Paris terrorist attacks by creating an offensive cartoon. Many people use the online website to retreive their news. I believe it’s much more convenient, cheaper and can be accessed anywhere for example using your cell phone. According to Paul Grabowicz, professor at UC Berkeley, he references the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press that 40% of people get their news from the internet in comparison to the 35% who read newspapers. This shows the transition from printed to digital media.

Daily Mail articles feature more images ahead of actual written content and is written in Basic English. This connotes the intelligence of the readers, they aren’t very smart. This is shown following the ‘Brexit’ results when the Daily Mail wrote an article about the effect Brexit will have on the UK. One comment read “We wanted everything spelt out exactly like this so we knew the pros and cons...to late now publishing this”. You just have to look at the verb ‘to’ is misspelt and the whole syntax to see that they readers are not intelligent.

With the printed edition featuring an equal ratio of images and text it goes down to the readers preferences. I believe that the digital media will eventually dismiss the printed media era. Digital media allows media outlets to do so much more such as including videos, audio files and links to other websites. It would be saddening to see the printed media become a secondary source however the media age is moving on and media outlets need to adapt otherwise they’ll fall behind.
